5. Optimize the Title, Heading tags, Meta tags, including Description and Keyword tags. The Title tag is the most important tag. It is shown in the browser window and appears in the SERPs as the title of the webpage. To optimize the title tag, it is good to include keyword phrases, about 60 characters, using the site’s name and some top-level keyword phrases for the site.
The heading tags, H1, H2, H3, etc. should include keyword phrases and should standout using bold or <strong></strong> tags. Meta tags describe the content of the page, giving the page description and relevant keywords found on the page. In some cases, the Description tag is used along with the Title tag, with the Keyword tag used less significantly.
However, it is necessary to include keywords; perhaps two or three, avoiding “keyword stuffing.”
6. The use of External Style Sheet is good for SEO purposes because it clears the clutter that would have occurred in the code had it been included in the source code itself. By having a separate file that is referenced in the HTML document, makes the code to be clean and enables search engines to properly access the important tags used on the pages.
7. Search engines (SE) bots access web pages by way of links on the page. These links could be internal links from one page to another, site map, or through the site’s navigation. Therefore, optimizing the site’s navigation as well as keywords linking to other pages will do well for SEO.
8. Submit HTML & XML Sitemap to the search engines. HTML Sitemap helps site users and search engines find their way throughout the site. Users also navigate throughout the site, while search engines use it to ensure that every page is found using text links. XML Sitemap is not accessible by users and Google uses it to access the site for indexing purposes.
9. Perform External Linking from one website to your site. Links help the search engine know what your site is about and they also help find your site. Search engine’s bots go from site to site to crawl these sites and when they see link from one site to your site, they follow that link back to your site.
Linking to your site from another site makes your site relevant, since other sites are linking to your site. The more links pointing to your site, makes your site more popular. These links need to be links with high page ranks or PR, Google’s way to specifying authority for a particular site.
It is also necessary to research your competition to know how many links pointing to their sites or which keywords they are using. Ways to get links to your site from other sites include posting on forums, commenting on blogs, press releases, article writing, etc.
10. Submit to Map Sites so that the website or business is represented in local search listings. It is necessary for the site to be in the local search index in addition to the organic search index. For example, use Google map, Bing, and Yahoo listings to submit your site and ensure that your site is present in that location’s listings.
